Microchipping Your Pets

"Handsome" is a black and white kitty who may just be the luckiest cat in town.

Like most cats, Handsome hates loud noises. July 4th, 2014 was especially scary - the fireworks were so terrifying that he escaped from his home and ran away. Days passed and the fireworks subsided, but Handsome's family was unable to find him. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.

Fast forward to July 2015: A good samaritan found a dirty black and white cat walking on the highway. The cat was brought to Southgate Animal Clinic, where he was scanned for a microchip. Amazingly, he had one! We tried calling the phone number registered with the chip, but unfortunately, it was outdated and we were unable to reach the family.

The microchip company HomeAgain sent a message to the email address on file. Shortly thereafter, we got a call - it was Handsome's family! The tired, lucky cat and his thankful owners were finally reunited a full year after he went missing.

Handsome's tale serves as an important reminder - microchipping your pets GREATLY increases the chances you will be reunited if your pet ever goes missing. If you move, or get a new phone number or email address, it is vital to update your information with the microchip manufacturer - BEFORE you find yourself in the middle of a story like Handsome's.
